Why Me and Not Mark Many Voters are wondering why to vote for me and not Mark Kleinschmidt. Well, here are a few things to remember about Mark and his voting record as a council member during the past 8 years.
Mark has voted for things like .....
- "Healthcare for Life" for the council members
- The East 54 Development to be right up to the sidewalk without any tree buffer (this was the town council's idea, not the developers)
- Taxpayer financed elections that he is personally benefiting from this year (Even thought I recommended at the time that he should not vote on this issue because he was likely to use it in this years election, which raised a conflict of interest.)
- "Mayor for Life" - Removed the term limits for the mayor position on town council
- Increasing Taxes and Fees - Chapel Hill is now second to only Carrboro in having the highest city taxes and fees in the State of North Carolina.
As your mayor, and as an attorney (as is Mark), I would not vote on any issue that can be construed as self-interest, such as Health Care for Life for council members, use of public tax dollars for my election, eliminating term limits for the mayor, etc. Rather, I will ask that such matters be placed on the election ballots so the citizens can vote on them. I will not raise taxes until I am convinced that we have eliminated all the waste in the town's operations systems, without reducing services. Clearly, these have not been the approaches taken by Mark. I will be a much better steward of your trust and your money as mayor. |
