Health problems with Beagles can be prevented.  The most common health problems with Beagles is ear infection and obesity.  Although ear infections are not necessarily breed specific, Beagles are usually prone to ear ailments due to the floppy, long nature of their ears.Beagles are prone to obesity because they like to eat but hate to exercise.

It’s been 7 months since Jack’s been neutered, and he runs around like a jack rabbit!Jack darts to and fro as if he’s chasing some imaginary prey.  When we go to the dog run, he leaps high into the air, springs from the bushes, and does all sorts of summer salts. 

Although I did cut back on his food, I really don’t need to worry about him getting fat.  Jack is quite capable and willing to run in the NYC Marathon!  Okay, back to health problems with Beagles, since that is what this article is about.

Beagle Ear Infections

Because the Beagle’s ears are long and floppy, they are prone to ear infections.Due to a lack of air flow through the ears, mites get trapped in a Beagle’s ears, causing infection. 

Regular Check Ups

To prevent health problems in Beagles, do weekly check-ups in your Beagle’s ears.  Clean them once a week.If your Beagle has a proclivity to ear infections, then clean his ears more often.Be sure to dry your beagle’s ears after he comes out of the tub.

Buying a HEPA filter system for the house is a wonderful idea for somebody with dog allergies.  These units are simply found at many office and home improvement stores.  They’ll run continuously removing dust and allergens from the air.  The owner will have to ensure they change any filters and clean the units as advised by the maker.  These units will need a small money investment but will make a serious difference.  The systems come in various sizes for the treating of a single room or for a few rooms. 

The last step worth discussing in treating dog allergies is for the individual to see an allergist.  There are numerous medications and allergy shots which can help most people’s allergies to be manageable.  The allergist will be well placed to suggest the best measures to be taken by the patient.
